Starting at First Base for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Jackie Robinson

On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke Baseball’s color barrier when he made his historic MLB debut. Every year on April 15, Baseball honors Jackie’s legacy by celebrating his life, values and accomplishments. The extensive and unified League-wide show of support has included retiring Jackie’s number throughout the Majors in 1997; dedicating April 15 as Jackie Robinson Day each year since 2004; and requesting that every player and all on-field personnel wear his No. 42 during games scheduled on Jackie Robinson Day since 2009.

Inaugural Celebration

Jackie Robinson Day was first celebrated on April 15, 2004, marking the anniversary of Robinson’s debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. This day was established to honor Robinson’s groundbreaking entry into Major League Baseball and his enduring legacy.

Universal Number 42

On Jackie Robinson Day, all MLB players, coaches, and managers wear Robinson’s number 42. This unique tribute began in 2009, symbolizing solidarity and recognition of Robinson’s contributions to the sport and society.

Retiring Number 42

In 1997, Major League Baseball universally retired Jackie Robinson’s number 42 across all teams, the first and only number to receive this honor. Players who already wore the number, like Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees, were allowed to continue wearing it until their retirement.

Annual Ceremonies and Events

Each year on April 15th, MLB hosts special ceremonies, educational programs, and community events to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day. These events often include guest speakers, on-field tributes, and activities designed to educate and inspire young fans about Robinson’s legacy and the importance of diversity and inclusion in sports.

Cementing Jackie Robinson's legacy

Cementing Jackie Robinson’s legacy, a statue of him stands proudly in front of the LA Dodgers Stadium, symbolizing his enduring impact on the sport and society. Unveiled in 2017, this tribute captures Robinson in his iconic base-stealing pose, reflecting his athleticism and fearless spirit. The statue not only honors Robinson’s trailblazing achievements in baseball but also serves as an inspiring reminder of his contributions to the civil rights movement and the ongoing fight for equality.

The Statue stands in the left field reserve plaza, with sweeping views of downtown Los Angeles in one direction and Elysian Park in the other.
